Sadly we must convey the news that former R.H.L.S. member Harry Hawkins passed away on May 7th 2005.  Harry and Madge were stalwart workers at The Club and Harry's vast knowledge and skill were passed on to many other members of The Club. Harry was a long time member and Past President of the Toronto Society of Model Engineers and the #1 Gauge garden railway club. Each time I visited Harry at his home in Scarborough, I left with many ideas, information and usually a handful of parts or books to aid me in this hobby.  Harry always had stories of his many experiences during his well traveled life.  He often said he'd "been everywhere" and I could never name a city in Canada that he did not know something about or have a recollection of some happenings there. The attention to detail and the quality of Harry's models were truly inspirational. Our deepest sympathy is extended to Madge and her family at this difficult time.  Thanks to Deborah Motton for these words.

WANTED: TREASURER - STARTING IN SEPTEMBER

TSME is looking for someone to take over as Treasurer in September, or sooner. Please let any one of the exec know if you are willing to do this.

IN CASE YOU MISSED THE MAY MEETING

GARTH STATHAM mentioned that the GHLS 7 ¼” gauge track at the Hamilton Museum of S&T will not be operating this year due to road alterations on the QEW which encroach on the Museum property where the track is laid.

GERRY REED talked about Steady Rests and their use on the Lathe. The usual types have 3 jaws; a fixed steady is attached to the Lathe Bed, the Traveling Steady to the Cross slide. They are used for threading or turning long pieces, and also for centering a bar that won’t pass through the headstock bore. When using a steady do not over tighten the jaws and use plenty of lubricant. A collar can also be used, held in the steady and the bar run in the collar bore – avoids ant marking on the bar being machined

DAVE SAGE showed a nicely prepared DVD he had prepared on metal polishing, staring with fine grit wet and dry papers 400/600/1000/2000 – use wet, 3 grades of steel wool and finely rubbing compound. Dave said that steel wool may give a better finish than 2000 grit. Little finger prints are the enemy of fine polishes ! The DVD will be available from the TSME Library

BILL HUXHOLD showed and talked about his current project, a model of a Lentz Poppet Valve Twin Cylinder Horizontal Engine – he showed the completed cylinders and their base plate. The valves have yet to be installed. He also explained how he made the Flywheel from two halves of a smaller diameter bar.

ROBERT WYSS showed John Nicolaides photos of Herb Jordan’s Porsche (Carrera) 4 cylinder engine and the Porsche Turbocharged Flat 12 cylinder engine along with some shots of some of the components

BERT deKAT had been to the Arizona Flywheelers’ Engine Show in Cottonwood, held 19-20March 2005. Bert talk about and showed slides of various Stirling and other type engines at the show
