It is with much sadness that we report the sudden and rather unexpected death of BOB MORROW at his home on Sunday 24 October. He was at the October meeting and took the meeting notes that appear in this edition of The Modeller. Bob had, over the years that he was a member of TSME, always put in his share in helping run TSME when he was on the exec. and also when he took notes from the meetings. He had completed a well-finished Traction Engine as well as a fair number of other interesting and varied models. We shall miss him. We offer our sympathy and condolences to his family and close friends.

IN CASE YOU MISSED – THE OCTOBER MEETING…….

RICHARD TROUNCE gave the final talk on bearings. The subject of this talk was plain bearings, which

generate 4-10 times the friction of ball bearings. They require 1 to 1.5 thou. clearance per inch of diameter over the shaft size to allow for the oil film which carries the load when the shaft is running. Bearings should be lubricate from the bottom of the bearing instead of the top to prevent dirt from entering the bearing.

A guest speaker, MARTY IFTODY – a member of the Toronto Model Railway Club, gave a talk about the control layout of the club’s track. The track is ‘O’ gauge and is nine scale miles long. The club is located at 37 Hanna Avenue, Door No. 8 Toronto. Operating nights are on the first Wednesday of the month. See www.modelrailroadclub.com or call (416)- 536-8927 for more details.

BOB MORROW showed the workings of his scratch built flint-lock gun mechanism. The talk ended with a bang.!

Our second guest speaker, DAVE WOODHEAD gave a talk with videos of his garden railway. The video was very informative due to the fact the camera was mounted on one of his radio controlled trains, giving a ground’s eye view of the layout.

PAUL STEARNS gave a talk about making curved deep slots in aluminum using two methods. One involved bending a bandsaw blade with roller bearings and a second method which required the use of a thinned hole saw. Paul also showed a newly acquired wing material made from extruded aluminum.

STEVE LILLY brought down his vertical steam engine Georgina with an almost completed boiler. The boiler had a spiral flow reducer in the central tube. The boiler is to be fired by a three wick alcohol burner.

ROBERT WYSS showed how he cuts replacement glasses for air gauges from plastic sheets. Robert cautioned that the sheet must clamped down around to prevent the plastic from flexing by the cutting force.
