MARCH MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
DAVE POWELL & DEREK O’DELL showed and talked about a 3” scale Burrell Traction Engine that so far has had 10 years of Derek’s work invested in it. The boiler has tested satisfactorily at 250psi and it is hoped to steam it this summer. The crankshaft was machined from a single piece. Gearing has yet to be installed. The castings and drawings came from the Channel Islands (Plastow) but the drawings were found to have many errors in them which made assembly difficult – so Dave Powell has helped out in correcting these errors for Derek. The engine was demonstrated to run well on air at the meeting.
BERT deKat showed his home made Cam Grinder he had made for producing cams for his Vulcan Vega twin cylinder I.C. Engine. The grinder copies a 4 x size cam to produce the actual engine cam sets (intake and exhaust cams are made in pairs). The grinder was made from odds and ends from Bert scarp box.
DAVE BOWES spoke about the advantages of using rocker arms for activating his I.C. Engine solenoid operated valves, although the power at the valve may be reduced, depending on the arm pivot ratios. This can be corrected by design – by changing the arm to pivot ratios. The first attempt produced a maximum of 11,500rpm and
bent rocker arms, then, by increasing the rocker arm thickness he was able to get up to 14,800rpm.
BOB CRAWFORD showed an interesting DVD he made of his visit to the 75th Model Engineering Show
in the UK. There were plenty of fine models of locomotives, aircraft, ships and machinery as well as various trade stands.
REMO COSOLO showed a lantern he made – a copy he made here in Canada, of one he had watched a craftsman make in 1928, who lived close to his house when he lived in Italy. The lantern was design to work on kitchen oil.
DON CARR showed and spoke about his “Duplex” grinder for sharpening small drill bits (#60 to 5/8” dia). The Grinder design was featured in ME 1963/4. The unit uses a microscope to align the drill in the correct position against a “lip gauge” for grinding. Don talked about the difficulties in the Grinder’s construction he has experienced so far.

Re my Ad. for a Flash Steamer article: A very sincere thank-you to SHARKY NAGAO for going to all the trouble of finding the article at the library, copying it for me and then bringing it in for me. My deep appreciation to him for those kind deeds.
SHARKY’S THOUGHTS TO PONDER DURING TOOL CHANGES
● A long attention span enhances creativity
● Practice is an integral part to success, provided that you are practicing correctly
● If you learn by example, then spend some time attempting to identify the example you want to learn from
