DECEMBER MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT  (A big thank you to John Chappell for recording these notes for The Modeller)

President, ROBERT WYSS began the meeting at 8.01 by showing a picture of the decrepit “African Queen”.  He reminded us that next month BOB CRAWFORD would be reporting to us on his visit to this year’s British Model Engineering Show.  Then the table was reviewed, including DAVE POWELL’S 2 speed gear box with its internal differential.

DAVE BOWES then gave us good details about his Mk III EVIC engine and told how he built the valving with “hot-rodder’s” advice to avoid eddies in the passages and his construction of tapered springs.

DAVE SAGE pointed out how he had “tidied-up” Vic. Varga’s engine which is now in Robert’s hands.  Then he started it with only one pull to show it ran well.  One of his noteworthy alterations was putting teflon tubing over the H.T. leads. Dave also gave some useful recommendations for drilling very small holes – less than #80 in size.

After intermission and a brief auction, DON KEIL a guest and visitor who had a great deal of experience on the University’s solar-powered car, gave a detailed talk about the forces affecting a moving vehicle.  This was well illustrated with graphs and he answered many questions.

JEFF KINGMA explained how he had made a good-looking heavy fly cutter, and advised careful thought about rotation when making such an item.

DON CARR showed many jigs etc. that he uses to overcome several fairly common machining problems.

ALLAN MEE told us about his new dividing head and how he cut the worm.

RICHARD TROUNCE showed a bogie from his “Big Boy”   and told of the alterations made including making the axles able to tip.

BILL SALT explained his new boiler cladding using a limited thickness of wool felt.

SHARKY’S THOUGHTS TO PONDER DURING TOOL CHANGES

   ●          Finding a way to become less rigid just may help you discover the key to solving a problem

   ●          Faster is not always better !

   ●          Working smarter is more important than working longer

   ●          Stand back and observe

   ●          When you’re really not sure, sleep on it. (I nearly put “step on it”, which may be how we feel sometimes – DB)
