Here’s wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and safe holiday season. May the New Year bring many happy occasions, smooth and flat surfaces, round diameters and circular holes. May all the parts fit together properly, run freely without binding and look really good.

FRIDAY 13 JANUARY 2006 AT 8.00pm; the usual place - 1001 QUEEN STREET WEST

FOR THE EVENING’S PROGRAM, YOU’LL HEAR FROM:

GERRY REED will introduce our guest, DAVE KIEL who will talk about gasoline and fuel savings for your vehicle,

BOB CRAWFORD will have visited the Model Engineering Exhibition in London, England and will talk about it, and hopefully, will have some pictures,

DAVE BOWES has been working on the Head for his Mk3 EVIC Engine. Dave will tell us about it,

DON CARR will show, and explain some of the cheap, simple and effective tools and fixtures he has made and used.

If you have any tools or fixtures you have made and used, then bring ‘em in to show too,

RICHRD TROUNCE will continue on where he left off with his last month’s talk on CNC for beginners - programming for his Sherline Mill. For those interested, Richard recommends that you access the Sherline website, www.sherline.com/CNCinstructions.htm, to download details of the programming to read through before his talk. There are two versions, 2.18 and 4.xx. This will give you some background on what Richard will talk about. There are several pitfalls that you will not be aware of and Richard will outline these in his talk.

DAVE SAGE will talk about Vic Varga’s V-4 IC Engine he has acquired

And if you have a project you are currently working on, or recently finished – please bring it along and we will do all we can to fit your item into the program.

DECEMBER MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

At the invitation of RON MELVIN, PROFESSOR MICHAEL COLLINS of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto presented his well illustrated lecture, "In Search of Elegance" which dealt with the history and structural engineering aspects of famous bridges and other significant buildings around the world. Professor Collins’ fascinating and beautifully illustrated talk started from Roman times. He outlined the skills of the Romans in both design and construction with such buildings as the Parthenon, Ceasar’s bridge across the Rhine in about 55 BC and various other bridges and aqueducts. Relatively more recently, Robert Hooke (1635 – 1703) made a major contribution to engineering and design formulae (many of which have been wrongly attributed to Newton!). Thomas Telford was a builder of many significant bridges and roadways in the UK. Some examples of modern day elegant designs are the CN Tower and the Oil Platform.

RICHARD TROUNCE gave his talk on A Beginner‘s Guide to CNC programming and machining using as his example his CNC Sherline Mill he had recently bought, for approximately US$3000.00 (without the monitor). The Mill is capable of 4 axis programming (the 4th axis being rotation, using a rotary table. The software for the Sherline is G Code which is a relatively simple system, instructing the mill to go from point to point, i.e. straight line, circle, radii, but this

is limited – for example an ellipse can not be followed. Richard showed an Expansion Link he had milled

using the Mill that had machined both the inside slot and the outside profile. He also brought in a

Connecting Rod similarly machined on his mill. Due to the machine’s small size, only quite small cuts can be made. A CAD drafting program is really necessary so that machining co-ordinates can be fed into the program.

SHARKY’S THOUGHTS TO PONDER DURING TOOL CHANGES

● Sometimes in order to do things differently, you need to create a new set of tools.

● The most flexible trees survive the greatest storm

● It generally works better to over estimate how much time you need to complete a project, rather than to underestimate it.

● Preparation is the master time saver

● As you work on a project, once in a while, close your eyes and visualize what your final result will look like.
