FEBRUARY MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT (and many thanks, again, to JOHN CHAPPELL for these notes)
The 10 Feb. ’06 meeting began at 8.09 called by Pres. ROBERT WYSS and the attendance book circulated. There were no announcements, so GERRY REED introduced his friend, DESMOND HOLISTER, from Plymouth Dock Yards.
Gerry also said that a “Suggestion Box” was to be placed near “The Kitty” along with pad and pencil and members were to be encouraged to suggest program items.
He also gave an abbreviated history of the “Extended Intermission” and that this year it was to be a visit to the R.H.L.S. track site on Saturday the 15th July. A map to show this location is to appear in The Modeller before the event.
He asked about references in “Model Engineer” concerning pipe organs.
ERNIE HILL gave a lengthy slide show on how he had reworked an old lathe including grinding the bed and aligning the head & tail stock. He had used “tercite” from Ace Distributing to reduce friction. It is a machinable plastic.
BILL SALT showed his very pretty completed Julliett locomotive with Baker valve gear, and pointed out how its parts were designed to permit easy servicing jobs at-the-track. He thanked club members for their help in its building. Boiler cladding and paint were aggravating problems, but with beautiful looking job resulting. He recommended “clear coat lacquer” on polished steel for “bright” parts. DAVE POWELL emphasized the great satisfaction Bill was able to have because he could say “I built it myself”.
DAVE SAGE told us of his partly built Atkinson Engine, and while mention was made about its unusual cycle it is amazing so few questions were asked about it. Dave showed the patterns he had made for future cast parts like the flywheel. From first hand experience he advised modelers to avoid old-bed-frames as a source of material as “they are very hard iron lumps glued together.” For piston rings Dave had followed the advice of DAVE BOWES. Turn to size, break. spread & anneal. The TIG welding course Dave was taking was in use.
LLOYD HALL explained the peculiar shaped metal and windshield wiper motors he had on the bench. They were a practical device for driving the table on his mill. He was driving this by means of a battery charger plus extra capacitor.
BRIAN GLOVER showed his part-built Williamson 1860’s engine and explained how the parts had been held for machining. The model has 5/8” stroke & ½” bore.
BOB INRIG showed his beautifully finished “jigs” as well as a hinging device for holding an indicator
compete with adjustment pivot held between two ball bearings so it had no play.
DON CARR told of inspiration from Dave Powell in his making a fine Hudson locomotive, and the frustrations
of trying to rework some frames that had been wrongly assembled. He lucidly gave some interesting history of the Hudson design and how effective it had been. He listed 5 magazines concerned and ask for a “look at” - “The Model Maker” 1933-’43; as well as “the Model Craftsman” 1935-1950.
DAVE POWELL showed a 50 year old photo of himself in the cab of a steam road vehicle, and explained that the free-lance model he’s building is of a somewhat similar vehicle. He answered questions pointing out that a traction engine pulls by a draw-bar, and ‘waggon” carried its load on its own wheels.
It was good that all hardware on the bench was discussed, yet the meeting ended at 10.56.
