APRIL MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED
IT (with many thanks to Robert Wyss for taking these notes – Dave B)
DAVE POWELL – Dave showed us his traction engine running on compressed air. It ran quite smoothly on the table as well as on the floor. The engine is not based on any particular engine so Dave let his design be more practical than strict scale. One feature was that the steering was a lot faster than prototype.
GERALD GARDINER – A fascinating talk on ‘Footie’ boats was given by our librarian on this boat design. Wood for the hull and metal for the keel. The name Footie refers to the fact that they are one foot long (is there a cute way of saying 305millimeters?)
BILL HUXHOLD – Brought in his almost complete poppet valve engine. It is based on an actual engine in Austria. Bill went into MINUTE detail about how he fabricated the valves. Also highlighted was the small pulley wheel he
machined from solid.
BERT DEKAT - Bert showed us his miniature concrete mixer he made for the N.A.M.E.S. show this year. To
fit the size restrictions of the competition – all dimensions were halved. This required Bert to make some very small fasteners.
REMO COSOLO – Remo gave a quick talk about his set up for grinding small tapers on his lathe using a compound and a spindle mounted on a surplus sewing machine motor.
BILL SALT – Presented the progress he has made on his traction engine. Detailed machining and set up instructions were given, and lots of questions were deftly answered by bill
RON MELVIN – Ron brought in his newly completed pillar tool. Ron gave an excellent slide show showing the stages of the construction of the tool. Ron based his design on pillar tools he has seen before and combined them to his liking to great result. Ron followed with a quick slide show of some past TSME events.
THE RAFFLE - Much appreciation to JACK PARRATT for the donation of our raffle prize. The welder was won by Kevin Close. $152.00 was raised for TSME from ticket sales.
A THANK YOU: To BRIAM LOBO, for the donation of various bar stock and shafting “ends”.
