OCTOBER MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT (notes with kind permission and help from John Chappell)
LARRY DOYLE showed his Shaper tool and described how the extra length of the arm might give inaccuracies, but measuring this none was found
STEVE LILLY had two engines he was making, one a fairly large model steam engine he had acquired and was finishing. The other a Matthew-Murray cycloidal engine that is coming along well
DAVE POWELL talked briefly about the front axle for his current project, a Steam Truck
PAUL STEARNS had done some interesting vacuum forming and explained his methods and showed us how he had overcome some early problems. His formed pieces of transparent plastic were fairly thick, nearly 1/8”. He emphasized a phenomenon of double sagging that was necessary to observe in order to get correct heating.
DAVE SAGE has made a DVD about adding a DRO to a Mill, Dave showed this DVD
KYLE SIMMONS showed some exquisitely detailed plastic pipe fittings made on a special kind of CNC lathe that could “turn” hex’s, etc.
JOE FOSTER showed his Jet Engine and method of assembling it to make a prop-jet suitable for a model aircraft. His prop was geared down and a very neat S.S. exhaust guide fitted. This had been fabricated using a spot welder he happened to have.
The BIG thing of the evening was Richard Trounce and Don Carr showing only the tender of a BIG BOY Locomotive they had acquired. It was nearly complete and amazed many members by its size and weight. The nearly completed model with tender is for 3 ½” gauge track. A weighty locomotive in even in this scale!
