SEPTEMBER MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

BILL H. brought in a hold load of different Work Holding tools, some familiar, some not so familiar.

Arbours: were used before chucks to hold material. They had a very slight taper to fit and hold the work piece in the bore.

Collets: Many differing types to hold round, square and hex. They can also have internal stops, and differing

inserts to hold special work pieces.

Expanding collets: for holding parts by their bore

Chucks: 3 , 4 and 6 jaw

Special V-block holders for attachment to a face plate

Step chucks to hold thin pieces by bore or externally.

Bill also talked about the making of the governors for his Slide Valve Engine and how he managed the intricate machining of the components using form tools (of his own making).

JOHN C. brought in 3 micrometers for Auction: 2 are Starret (1” to 2”), and one a Fowler (25cm to 50cm). Three lucky members left with these at very reasonable cost to each.

DAVE B. talked about original 2ft gauge locomotives that were made by Hunslet in Leeds, for the slate quarries in North Wales and on which his locomotive is based. The model was designed by the late Don Young for 5” gauge based on an Alice class loco built in 1889. Drawings, castings and copies of Don’s construction series were bought over from the UK and work started in 1993. The running frame has been tested on air, but not before each subassembly had to be isolated and re-aligned to remove many areas that were binding.

JEFF K. brought in a Tapping Machine that he made based on a wood lathe faceplate and spindle he bought (cheaply!) at Busy Bee – who are moving, by the way, to a new location (to 407 & Jane late September – at least I think it is Jane – Ed) and may have other “stuff” going cheap. The face plate is used as the table for Jeff’s tapping machine and he has made various tap holders and also a holder for stamping that fits the machining head as well.

DAVE P. talk about progress with his scratch built Steam Truck which may end up being articulated. The twin cylinder engine ( 0.970 bore x 1.125” stroke) was originally for compound working, but Dave has altered it to be a simple expansion type. The engine is mounted on its boiler and which has already been steamed. Dave explained how he altered to drive wheels (cast iron castors) to fit the chain drive sprockets. He is also making up his own differential unit which will be driven from a 2 speed gear box. Work has also started on the frame.

YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE MISSED IT! - TSME PICNIC

Once again we had bright, but not too hot, sunny weather to enjoy the delightful location for the TSME Picnic – at Bob and Pam A.s place near Orono. It was great to meet and chat with members and their families and friends and see some of the models working and locos running on the 7 ¼” gauge ground level track around the lake. A beautiful setting! Thank you to Edi P., Ron M. and Paul S. for bringing the pop, coffee and corn. A big thank you to Bob and Pam for hosting this event yet again.
