JUNE MEETING in case you missed it – or have forgotten
GERRY R. spoke of the life of Allan G. who had just recently passed away.
RICHARD T. then gave a brief review of Harry H. life. Richard brought in his Boston & Albany 4-6-6 3½” gauge loco that he is now finishing off. This loco was originally being built by Harry.
ROGER C.
An AUCTION of some castings, engines, books and odd bits and pieces raised some money for TSME
and for the owners of some of the auctioned pieces.
STEVE L. showed the Vertical Piston Engine (it has no crosshead) he has started that he is constructing from plans he bought at Wyandotte. The engine has an internal toothed ring gear that drives the valve mechanism. Steve found that this was an expensive item to buy from Cdn Bearings ($80), however was lucky enough to locate a set while at Wyandotte for $5.00. Steve is making the engine from aluminum rather than brass.
JEFF K. had brought down an item he had bought at the Barrie Flee Market although he originally didn’t know what it was for – he just took a fancy to it! Turns out it is a Hardness Tester Head for checking hardness of welds
DAVE S. designed and made his own Digital Read Out (D.R.O.) for his lathe. Dave designed it to have minimal parts - It only cost approx $15.00 in parts! Dave is prepared to share the design with any interested TSME member.
OMLET 2005 – JUNE 26
Once again this event was hosted by and held at the Golden Horseshoe Live Steamers track at the Hamilton Museum of Steam and Technology. In conjunction with OMLET, the Museum held its annual “Making It Work” event, which some TSME members participated. As a bonus, the Museum staff filled the temporary model boat pond for “Boat people.
This year there were only 8 competitors in the 3 ½” and 4 ¾” gauge competition.
At the end of the day, the scrutinizers came up with the results, being in #1 position was Ian W. of the home
club. In second place was Brian C. of TLS, while in 3rd place, again from GHLS was Ted M..t.
In a brief ceremony conducted by the President of GHLS, Bob M., the prizes were given out.
It was at this time that the Avro Lancaster from the Canadian Warplane Museum was heard and seen, a little east of the track on its way to do a flypast at the Oshawa air Show. At about 4.15pm when everyone was getting ready to leave for home, the Lancaster flew majestically over the Museum on the return flight to its base at Mount Hope. Could it be that our reporter had something to do with the Lancaster’s appearance - ???!!!
As usual, a full tabulation of the OMLET competition will be available at the September meeting
From your Special Events Correspondent
