SEPTEMBER MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT,
BILL HUXHOLD brought in to show his completed Sulzer Poppet Valve Twin Cylinder Engine. Bill explained how he spliced the 1/8” dia rope belts using a block of aluminum drilled through one side to exit the perpendicular side to the side that was drilled, at 7o , and then that side part machined off to expose a long ellipse. The rope was then threaded through and cut along this face for both ends. The two ends were then glued together.
Bill also mentioned his latest venture – making his own Locomotive Steam driven Generator from scratch.
The 0.020” thick stator laminations came from a transformer, turned in multiples, to 1” dia and bored through.
Holes for the stator wires were drilled through, then internal slots to these holes broached using Bill’s specially made broach. A sample turbine wheel has been machined, with a modified end mill, to produce cups as in a Pelton wheel. The nozzle for directing the steam at the turbine will be similar to that in an injector.
JOE FOSTER showed a “nifty” clamping device he designed and made so that he could free up the valves in the Ford Flat Head Engine from his recently acquired (full size) WW2 Bren Gun Carrier.
JEFF KINGMA has rebuilt a 1940/1 AMMCO Shaper – Jeff explained how he found various errors that had occurred probably during the manufacture and assembly of this machine. He told of how he checked then machined the areas of the sliding surfaces to greatly improve the operation and accuracy of the machine, that is now re-assembled and working. Jeff emphasized that the correct rotation sequence for a shaper is important – a slow cutting stroke with a faster return (and not the reverse of this).
DAVE BOWES talked, with the aid of great pictures, how his
EVIC engine self destructed while running at approx. 13,000rpm while at the
BERT deKat has been working on a model of “Whisper Gen” Stirling Engine. The designed by a D.M.Clucas of Mississauga who produces, for a price, full size versions as 200Kw generators. The engine uses a rather complex arrangement to convert the power from 4 hot end vertical (double acting) cylinders to rotary motion (it’s too difficult to explain in writing – so take a look at it whenever you have the chance!). The “cold end” that Bert is using is a converted pressure cooker – the cool end has to be pressurized.
KYLE SIMMONS had a summer job at a machine shop which had some large and rather interesting machines
which he showed and talked about with the aid of pictures. Kyle worked at various jobs – cleaning a CNC
machine tool changer and a large radial drill to name a few.
TSME/TLS PICNIC: - SATURDAY 9 SEPTEMBER. Was held at BOB ALLIN’S in Orono, as in past years. Despite the rainy morning weather, the Picnic went ahead and those that went had a very enjoyable afternoon. Thank you Bob and Pam for again hosting this popular TSME event.

LAND SPEED RECORD: On 26 August, the JCB Dieselmax supercharged diesel streamlined vehicle claimed the Land Speed Record for a diesel vehicle at 350.092mph (not kph!) upping the record by some 115 mph. The vehicle is powered by 2 – 750bhp balanced supercharged engines of JCB (UK) manufacture, with Ricardo Engineering assistance. And yes, this is the same JCB company who manufactures that JCB equipment you sometimes get stuck behind on the highway!
TEST QUESTION: Do you notice anything different with this edition of The Modeller? No prizes though!
