JUNE MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT, OR HAVE FORGOTTEN !

JOHN CHAPPELL’s guest AL RUTKE about Laser cutting – really a sophisticated form of flame cutting. A laser is a coherent light source and very controllable. Laser cutters are good for steels and stainless steels, but not so good for cutting brass or aluminum which require more power than does steel or stainless. Cutting thicknesses that Al’s machines are capable of cutting: Mild Steel – 3/8”, stainless – 1/8”, brass – 0.075”. Very small holes can

be cut, down to 0.021” diameter. The cutting systems are always computer controlled using MasterCam,

AutoCAD or G code software. Al answered many questions from the floor. A very interesting talk. Thank

you, John, for “finding” Al and to Al for agreeing to come and give this talk.

BILL HUXHOLD brought in many examples of Form Tools he has made for specific machining contours. Bill demonstrated how he grinds (on a 120 grit wheel – not soft stone) and finishes the form tool shape using a Dremel type hand grinder. Bill advised that if chatter is experienced during machining using a form tool, clean off the chatter marks by revolving the chucked part by hand, with the cutter taking off the last thou or so.

The AUCTION of much of (the late) BILL SANDERS machining equipment and some other items: All the “stuff” went to good homes. Thanks to ROBERT WYSS, who did the auctioning with speed and plenty of humour thrown in, to KEVIN CLOSE for recording the buyers, and to KYLE SIMMONS for distributing the “stuff” to the eager buyers..
