MARCH 2007 MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT,  ( with many thanks to JEFF KINGMA)

JOHN CHAPPELL talked about the use of nichrome wire to cut various shapes in foam. He demonstrated a jig he built using a 120vac supply, modulated through a Variac, and then connected to the wire which was kept taught as it heated up by incorporating a spring in the V-shaped wooden jig. After allowing the wire to get to a dull red colour he showed how it would cut through white foam. Contour forming using wood shapes glued to the ends of the foam (plane wings) and also freehand forming was demonstrated. He also showed how the jig could be used to cut pieces to a uniform thickness. As well he showed how model ship hull forms could be cut using the layout? lines in the plans to verify the accuracy of the drawings.

DAVE POWELL brought his two steam wagon (lorry) models. He explained the differences between the “overtype” which has a horizontal boiler much like a traction engine and the “undertype” which has a vertical boiler and the engine underneath. The latter allowed the driving position to be at the front of the wagon. He built the overtype wagon from odds and ends and to his own design which resulted in a low cost model. The undertype wagon was purchased complete from the UK and is a “Robin Dyer” design based fairly closely to the original “Clayton” lorries. He had to do some “tuning” to get it running and added a reduction gear to the crankshaft for better low speed control and traction? The web sites to view these types of lorries is “traction engine discussion group”, “steam scenes” and “traction talk”. He also related some of his experiences with the full size versions during his youth, and with his first job.

DAVE BOWES brought castings of the “Silver Bullet” IC engine designed by Bob Shores. He had to make

his first real camshaft and used 1144 steel which machines well and can be easily heat treated. He

demonstrated a fixture/jig included in the plans which is built to cut the lobes of the cam by following a timing disc and incremental cuts. Each lobe took about 35 – 40 minutes and is polished smooth afterwards. He plans to make the crankshaft in one piece also using 1144 instead of the built up method shown on the drawing (is this correct?).

RICHARD TROUNCE talked about AC motors. He first went into the theory of electro-magnetic fields and how they are used in an AC motor to change the polarity of the field windings and its effect on a squirrel cage rotor. There are rods of aluminum mounted axially in the rotor which helps to intensify the magnetic field. He explained how a single phase motor needs a set of start windings to help get the rotor started and also to set the direction of rotation. He also explained how a capacitor in the start windings increases torque by giving a phase shift to the winding. In the 1960’s and early ‘70’s copper and iron was reduced as a cost cutting measure resulting in motors with higher running temperatures, reduced efficiency and needing higher temp insulating systems. He then explained how 3 phase motors don’t need a start winding and that swapping any two supply leads will reverse direction. New low cost “Variable Frequency Drives” (VFD’s) enable these motors to vary their speed, a useful option for the hobbyist.

Lastly he discussed how to hook up single phase motors to 110v or 220v supply by following the motor nameplate instructions and how to reverse direction by swapping the link to the start/main winding in the internal panel in the motor.

FOR SALE, WANTS OR SWAPS:

FOR SALE: by RICHARD TROUNCE. A Calcomp Pen Plotter #1043. Takes E size drawings (34” x 44”). Has an RS 232 connection. 8 Pen carousel. Still works well. Looking for a good home. About 5ft long x 4ft high and 2ft deep.

FOR SALE: by REMO COSOLO. Camper Van, 3.8litre Chrysler V8. 35,000miles only after an engine rebuild. AM-FM radio, TV rotary antenna. 8ft high inside raised roof. Spare gas tank, 5 Ziebart coats and never used on salted roads. Excellent condition. Good to drive away and use as is. $9,000.00 or best offer.

FOR SALE by GARTH STATHAM. Model Engineer Magazines for sale. Garth may

have your requirements – check your needs! Mainly vols. 133 to 191 (some already sold), and some

earlier ones, $10.00 to $15.00 per volume, depending on number of issues per volume.

WANTED: by DON CARR. Don is looking for the current phone number or address of Howard Hunt (formerly of Thornhill, Ontario) who is the son of P. Eldon Hunt. Hunt senior worked with Alex Josslin and LBSC. Eldon Hunt produced a number of North American locomotive designs in 2-1/2" and 3-1/2" gauge in the 30's and 40's. These designs are thought to be lost but Don is almost certain that they are with Howard Hunt, his son. It was

from Howard Hunt that Don obtained the Josslin Hudson drawings about 15 years ago through a TSME

member (Don can't remember who, though).

WANTED: by BOB McDONALD. Any Model Engineering books or magazines.

WANTED: by RICHARD TROUNCE. To borrow, and copy: Model Railroader Magazine of December 1954 – he is interested in an article on the Atlantic locomotive. Also, Richard is looking for a 16mm film reel to acquire.

WANTED: by GERRY REED.  3”, 4” and 5” pulleys to fit “A” belt. Total pulley cluster width

about 1 7/8”. Bore not important.
