JANUARY 2007 - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT,  (with many thanks to ROBERT WYSS, JOHN CHAPPELL AND RICHARD TROUNCE for talking notes of the meeting)

DON CARR talked about cheap & effective tooling, ie. using yardsticks & large paper clips to substitute for the expensive drawing plan holders. Don also showed methods for lining up the axle keyways when quartering locomotive wheels as well as centering square stock in the lathe to .001" or less.

ANDREW KNIGHT talked about an air "scrubber" that he uses in his kitchen & bathroom renovating business. He uses a propeller fan and two filters (furnace style) in the unit with the second filter being a much finer one that includes activated charcoal to try & absorb some of the fumes in the solvents & glues that are used. Andrew was looking for suggestions to improve the design that wouldn't compromise its portability.

Next, RICK SCHEIBL gave his talk on welding dos & don'ts, mainly as applied to mild steel and arc welding with some asides about TIG, MIG & gas welding. His favourite method of avoiding distortion is to clamp the work before welding so it can't move. This way, most distortion is eliminated, but it requires a thick table & lots of clamps. Very informative.

ROBERT LANGOIS talked about DCC (Digital Command Control) which is the modern method of controlling multiple model locomotives on the same track. It’s usually applied to both HO & "O" gauge systems. Each locomotive has its own transponder with its own digital address and the control signals are sent over the track to each locomotive. The track is continuously energised at 15 volts AC. The system is complex and has great potential.

Finally, DAVE POWELL talked about his progress with the 3 1/2" gauge Hoffman Hudson that DON CARR & RICHARD TROUNCE brought back from Sarnia in November. He has stripped it down completely and reworked much of it. He says that he thinks that at least 3 people have previously had a hand in its construction.

It has one of the Hoffman cast bronze frames. The boiler has been pressure tested to 250 psi with no leaks,

so that's one part that is OK.

FOR SALE, WANTS OR SWAPS:

Hunt senior worked with Alex Josslin and LBSC. Eldon Hunt produced a number of North American locomotive designs in 2-1/2" and 3-1/2" gauge in the 30's and 40's. These designs are thought to be lost but Don is almost certain that they are with Howard Hunt, his son.
