DECEMBER MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT,

ROMAN GORCZAK brought in his aluminum foundry he made, based on a cut-off propane cylinder. He explained its construction, piping layout and all the other parts need to control the propane and air supply. He uses a modified vacuum cleaner with a speed controller to provide low pressure air. The flame is set to whirl within the furnace by adjusting air pressure and gas pressure to a balance flame ignition rate and position in the furnace. He has calculated to make a melt in about 2 minutes using some 70,000Btu’s. A steel crucible last approx 2 melts.

JOHN CHAPPELL’S Guest, PERS DREWES gave a short history of wind generation starting with the “traditional” windmill used in Europe for pump water or milling grain. These are only about 3 to 4% efficient! In north America, many thousands were used for pumping water. The present generation of wind turbines used for electric generation are generally 3 bladed (for esthetic reasons, mainly – rather than having 2 or 4 blades). There are many patents for many different designs – some vertical axis turbines were developed in Canada and various examples can be seen at the Kortright Centre north west of Toronto (worth a visit).

There are now massive 6MW turbines being built, although many are still in the 0.5 to 2MW capacity. This was a very interesting and enlightening talk, nicely illustrated too.

ERIC KINGSLEY showed his scratch built Double Acting Single Cylinder Horizontal Engine. The 12th he has built, the first 2 from kits, the rest scratch built. This engine has a 1” bore with 1 ˝” stroke and is roughly similar to

a Stuart 9. Eric fabricated the crankshaft – it is not machined from solid, and runs in ball bearings. It ran

very smoothly on low pressure air.

BILL HUXHOLD showed his finished Turbine Generator running at an estimated 25,000rpm on about 30psi air. He said that the first generator didn’t work properly and overheated. The second unit works well. H used primer to coat the rotor laminations. Bill outlined the construction of the rotor with an “imbedded” magnet. He made a special non-magnetic static balance stand for balancing the rotors. He also showed a finish machined Pelton wheel type turbine wheel that is used in the turbine generator set. The generator puts out about 3 volts at 1 amp.

ROY ELLIOTT brought in various, mainly aluminum parts, for model single cylinder Diesel Engine he is working on. The engine has a 1 1/3” bore with 1 ˝” stroke – about 30cc. Overhead cam, ball bearing crankshaft bearings and splash lubrication. Roy is hoping to get about a 20:1 compression ratio. He explained in some detail the construction of the injector.

GERRY REED showed a rather large Record Vice he had recently picked up, and repaired

FOR SALE, WANTS OR SWAPS:

FOR SALE: by RICHARD TROUNCE, Ph 416-    . A Calcomp Pen Plotter #1043. Takes E size drawings (34” x 44”). Has an RS 232 connection. 8 Pen carousel. Still works well. Looking for a good home. About 5ft long x 4ft high and 2ft deep.

WANTED: By DON CARR. Don is looking for the current phone number or address of Howard Hunt (formerly of Thornhill, Ontario) who is the son of P. Eldon Hunt. Hunt senior worked with Alex Josslin and LBSC. Eldon Hunt produced a number of North American locomotive designs in 2-1/2" and 3-1/2" gauge in the 30's and 40's. These designs are thought to be lost but Don is almost certain that they are with Howard Hunt, his son. It was from Howard Hunt that Don obtained the Josslin Hudson drawings about 15 years ago through a TSME member (Don can't remember who, though).

WANTED: by BOB McDONALDAny Model Engineering books or magazines.

WANTED: By DAVE BRAY, Drawings(to borrow to copy) of Bassett Lowke 1 ˝” scale Burrell 7HP Traction Engine. These for a guy I recently met in Aurora, and not yet a member of TSME (hopefully he will join). He started on the Burrell in England in the late 60’s but has only just now restarted to work on it. His own

drawings are very faded and difficult to read.

WANTED: By RICHRAD TROUNCE, To borrow, and copy: Model Railroader Magazine of December 1954
