It’s finally looking more like summer is on its way. So it’s time to think about prepping your models for completion or better still, operation, so that you can prove them out, after all that hard work you put in over the winter! Continue with the modeling scene at our next meeting:

APRIL 2007 MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT,
DAVE BOWES showed his EVIC engine recently fitted with electric start. The starter runs up the engine to about 2800rpm before ignition. Dave demonstrated the engine started with its starter. The drive to the engine is by a toothed belt. Dave then went on to talk about progress on his Silver Bullet cylinder engine to Bob Shaw’s design which he had brought in to show. Castings had come from a visit to Cabin Fever. The crankshaft is now in the engine, and Dave explained his process for machining the crank shaft complete with counterbalance weights, from a single 1 ½” dia. Stressproof bar. He also tried machining the 2 halves of the big end bearings with the 2 halves crazy glued together which was not successful, and finally had to resort to soldering the halves together.
RON MELVIN showed a chainsaw engined car he built with friends, when he was 16 years old, with only hand tools. The car is about 24” long by 16” wide. He used to run it in the Yorkdale Shopping Plaza parking lot when activities like this were doable! The car was radio controlled and went like crazy! Interestingly, the wheels were made from promotional rubber tired ashtrays – the sight of which is reputed to have started the whole project.
BERT deKat showed a copy of a full size Wobble Yoke Assembly driven by an electric motor, the prototypes of which are driven by a commercial Whisper Gen engine (I hope I have this correct! Ed.). Bert also showed his
“Intriguing Object” the plans of which came from Model Engineer Magazine of March 2007. In all 3 drawing
projections (X, Y, and Z axis) the view is identical – a circle with 2 diameters at right angles. Bert explained how he machined this object in Perspex. Bert also showed a few pictures from the 2007 Cabin Fever show.
GERRY REED brought in an unknown device he had been given by a teacher at Durham College. He went home without anyone identifying what it was used for.
BILL HUXHOLD showed his Mark 1 and 2 (very small) Turbine Generators in operation, running on about 60psi air. The generators produce about 1/8 amps AC and convert this to DC, that lit up a few LED lights
DAVE POWELL brought in the running chassis of a 3 ½” Gauge Hudson locomotive he is fixing up. Apparently the design of the original model was by a Jack Hart and finished off by Hoffman in the early 1970’s to 80’s. Dave’s locomotive came form Sarnia, and has required much work to get it running. Dave has reamed the valve chests (piston valves) and had to rework the wheels as the conrods were not fitted correctly. It had obviously not been very well built initially. It has a completed steel boiler, cast iron cylinders and piston rings. The chassis was demonstrated running smoothly on air.

Josslin and LBSC. Eldon Hunt produced a number of North American locomotive designs in 2-1/2" and
3-1/2" gauge in the 30's and 40's. These designs are thought to be lost but Don is almost certain that they
