OCTOBER MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT,
RON MELVIN brought in an 18” Bending Break he had recently purchased from Busy Bee for around $30.00. Ron mentioned that he has been doing some modifications to it, so that it might actually bend some tin steel sheet without itself – bending!
ROMAN GORCZAK has been spending some time this summer making a foundry furnace and pouring a few aluminum castings. Roman brought in a pattern box set he used to cast a large “7” for his house number. He described how he set in the pattern, allowing for a small “well” at the bottom of the sprue to collect any loose sand as the aluminum was poured in. The white sand, clay and water mix was all “home grown” – the clay and sand coming from his back yard. Roman described the importance of making the clay and sand clean and free of iron based contaminants. He gave a detailed explanation of the design criteria and operation of his home built propane fired furnace. He found that it has worked very well and was not difficult or expensive to make.
DAVE OULTON brought in a few small Stationary Steam Engines he has made recently. Dave explained that he obtained a good deal of machining set up and process information from the Internet and showed these for various parts with the aid of pictures and the TSME camera set up, which worked very well. Dave said that he started his equipment with a small Lathe and Mill to which he has added DRO’s
BILL LOWRY showed a DVD of the Steam Clock that operates in the Gastown district of Vancouver. It is driven by a Stuart Turner Engine which drives a chain which lifts steel balls up so that on the ball’s downward journey enough power is provided to keep the clock going. It whistles every ¼ hour. Quite a tourist attraction! Bill also had a DVD of (the late) John Crook with his ¼ scale 15-30 McCormick-Deering gas engined tractor that he built. A model of a single cylinder vertical 7HP Gas Vertical Stationary Engine John also built.
DAVE POWELL showed a Steam “Lorry” he has recently acquired and that he is fixing up to run. The lorry is an underslung Foden type that he purchased (sight unseen!) and had it sent over form the UK. Dave has rebuilt the gear box to lower the vehicle’s speed. It is complete with finished boiler, and came with wheel castings for a riding car. He showed it moving in both directions, on low pressure air. It looks like an interesting machine!
FOR SALE, WANTS OR SWAPS:
WANTED: By DON CARR. Don is looking for the current phone number or address of Howard Hunt (formerly of Thornhill, Ontario) who is the son of P. Eldon Hunt. Hunt senior worked with Alex Josslin and LBSC. Eldon Hunt produced a number of North American locomotive designs in 2-1/2" and 3-1/2" gauge in the 30's and 40's. These designs are thought to be lost but Don is almost certain that they are with Howard Hunt, his son. It was from Howard Hunt that Don obtained the Josslin Hudson drawings about 15 years ago through a TSME member (Don can't remember who, though).
