Winter is still here despite the melt of the past week or so. Do think about bringing in your current project to show, and/or talk about. Other members are always keen to know what projects are on the go and to hear about different techniques. This, to a great extent, is what TSME is all about! So come and share these with your fellow members at our next meeting of 2008 on –

FRIDAY 8 February 2008 AT 8.00pm  - 1001 QUEEN STREET WEST

PARKING is now $8.00 at CAMH. There is free/cheaper parking on Shaw north of Queen, on the north side of Queen and on Rebecca (one street north of Queen, running parallel to Queen) – but please make sure you check to ensure it is okay to park where you choose to do so!

IN THIS EVENING’S PROGRAM YOU CAN EXPECT TO HEAR FROM:

JIM SMALL who will talk about and show some pictures of progress with his (large) locomotive,

ALEX BARRIE will talk about some Mini Shaper components,

CHRIS HIND has built his own foundry furnace and will explain how he did this, and

BERT deKat will bring along either an I.C. Engine or a Steam Engine he is currently working on

If you have a project you are currently working on, or recently finished – please bring it along to show, and you can talk about it, if you wish

JANUARY 2008 MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT,  (Many thanks to Geoff Kingma for taking these notes)

BILL SALT brought in the front axle assembly of his ¼ scale Little Sampson traction engine he is building. He had to make a LH square thread and nut and described how he went about it. After making the tap, and before heat treating it, he used it to cut the thread on the nut. Result – a “spiral” tap! After finally heat treating it he found it worked well – even with the spiral. He also showed how he made the chimney by using a tapered oak plug as a former and the axle itself using the shaper and the mill. He then described how he made the axle/boiler support plate.

BRIAN GLOVER brought in the Stuart 10H. He mentioned that it had taken a few years to complete. He made the crankshaft from a solid piece of steel and the red paint showed off the model very well.

NIGEL COPPOLA, a guest of DAVE POWELL’S, brought his partially completed 2” scale traction engine that had a very professional paint job. He went into detail on prepping the parts and the equipment used to do the actual painting.

In summary:

a) prepping: sand blast all parts (handling everything with gloves), etch-prime all items using an etching

primer (CTC “one step etch”)

b) rub down with 2000 grit wet or dry paper

c) Painting: he uses authentic paint obtained from the UK thinned 10% (no more than 20%) with Ronson

lighter fuel. Then filtered using “car quest” fine filters. The paint is applied using an HVLP spray gun in a custom built booth. The supplied air is filtered for oil, dried and then filtered for oil again. The mat black used on the chimney is CTC “Dura 1400” in a spray bomb.

d) final bake: 200 degrees F for 1 hour.

e) lining: He preps with French chalk and uses a lining pen from Phoenix paints (UK).

CHARLES FOSTER, also a guest of Dave Powell’s, talked about two of his hit & miss engines that he brought. One was a Vaughn side shaft and the other a Paul Breisch “Associated”. He also mentioned that he took up the challenge after seeing some of BILL HUXHOLD’S engines, and is working on a 1/8” bore and stroke model that has 1/32” valve stems. Asked what he uses for fuel, he said he has most success with Coleman fuel with a little bit of WD40 added.

ERNIE AND JIM HILL brought in some VW parts they are working on. They have put a turbo from a Cummings 5.9l diesel engine onto the head of a VW 1.9l 4 cylinder diesel. Their plan is to get up to 200hp from the original engine that put out 75! The extra boost requires improvements to the cylinder head and to the engine. Things like crankshaft bearing bolts, head bolts, connecting rods, oil pump and the head gasket all had to be upgraded. As well, a girdle plate was installed in the block.  They described how they lowered the compression ratio so the increased boost could be handled and how they installed a solid copper head gasket with metal “O” rings to prevent a blown gasket. They then described how a “twin turbo” works in a two stage mode.

COFFEE HELPER STILL WANTED: Anyone interested in helping with the coffee at intermission time during our meetings. We still welcome a volunteer, or two. Please let any of the exec members know of your willingness to help out.

NEW MODELLER EDITOR: GEOFF KINGMA has offered to take over as Modeller Editor from Dave Bray as from September. Thank you Geoff!  (Dave Bray, for one, is very relieved, and thankful that Geoff has offered to do this!)
