MAY 2008 MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT,
ERNIE HILL brought in his 2” scale Fowler Ploughing Engine that he brought over from Ireland several years ago and
that is part built. The kit of castings and drawings originally came from Blackgates Engineering. This Engine is for sale
at $3800.00
JOE FOSTER is working on the cockpit canopy of the Toronto Aerospace Museum’s Lancaster. He showed and talked about the rear canopy section. The frame he made from scratch, using plywood sections bent to suit. The glazing will be plexiglass bent to suit
ROB STEHLIK brought in his improved Fire Fighting Robot. With the aid of pictures, Rob explained that the 4 wheels are connected in such a way that they all turn parallel which each other, allowing the robot to turn on itself. Each wheel has a drive motor in its hub. Tow opposing wheels are spring to absorb any small floor irregularities. The body, which contains all the electronic controls and the fire extinguishing pressurised water tank, is made of bright green laser cut acrylic pieces. Sensors in the turret can detect heat and light and sense distance from the candle that the robot is intended to extinguish in competition. The robot was approx 9’ x 9” and about 6” high. Rob demonstrated the robot extinguishing a candle set up on the bench. The CAD drawings for each component were masterpieces!
KEN STRAUSS did much of the machining for Rob’s robot and showed, with more pictures, how he set up some of the trickier machining operations. Ken recommended from his experience with this work, that we should all have proper inside and depth micrometers!
BILL SALT brought in his 3 ½” gauge Juliet locomotive which he has found to be hard to steam on coal.
He has been trialing the firing by propane and is now having some success after several trial burners.
The loco is yet to be tried at the track though. Bill explained that the positioning of the burner in the firebox is crucial to success, and checked the heat distribution of the burner first by laser heat detection. He had to recheck once the burner once installed since the heat distribution had altered somewhat. The final burner he obtained from a distributor in the US.
BOB McDONALD has recently acquired a Clarkson Tool and Cutter Grinder and brought in some of its accessories for end mill sharpening and tap repointing and sharpening – quite a machine! Rob asked for anyone who can lend him a manual on this machine, to let him know.
DAVE BRAY showed his recently completed 4 ¾” gauge model of a Welsh Slate Wagon base on the 2ft gauge type used on the Ffestiniog Railway. The Frame and side and end slats are of wood, with cast iron wheels and bronze axle carriers. Drawings and castings were obtained from Blackgates Engineering.
JOHN CAREY showed a Knurling Toll he is making for his lathe to a design by Rudy Khouhpupt and published in Home Shop Machinist from January to June 2001

A = Aerospace Museum 1 Entry/access:
For the first meeting or so – enter through the museum front door, on the north
side of the building. Once we are familiar with the layout of the
place, we will probably have access through a side door close to the
meeting area – better for moving in any heavy stuff. 2 Start time:
Start time of 7.30pm, but we may not get access until between 7 and 7.15pm.
Leave by 10.30pm. 3 Washrooms: Yes,
both at the top of the mezzanine stairs, above the shop at the front of the
museum

DIRECTIONS NOTE: You must access from the west side - off Sheppard Ave.West. Carl Hall Road around the
north side of the runway is closed.
5 Parking: Plenty – and free. Areas are on the north and east sides of the museum. There is a popular indoor soccer arena to the south of the museum which often brings in many cars as well, but there should be still plenty of spaces around the museum.
