FEBRUARY 2008 MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT,  (Many thanks to Geoff Kingma for taking these notes)

The meeting opened with DAVE POWELL announcing that he is assuming the Presidency of the Club, after discussion at the January Exec meeting, and that ROBERT WYSS will continue to host the meetings. He also said that the Club meetings would be held, subject to final sign-off, at the Aerospace Museum in Downsview starting in September, 2008. The reason for the move in venue is that the present facility is due to be demolished.

BERT DE KAT discussed the model aeroplane engine he is building. It is a “Robin” designed by Eric Whittle and was featured in Strictly IC (Jan ’91). He showed the ½” diam. piston and the ring he made (Ref.  "Design and Fabrication of Piston Rings", George S. Trimble, Strictly IC Vol. 2 No. 7  Feb/Mar 1987), as well as the crankshaft. He decided to make the latter from a single piece of SAE 1144 rather than the built up design shown in the plans. The difficulty is that there is an integral gear involved! He showed how he made a hob for cutting the gears and the setup using an indexer to advance the gear through 15 degree increments for the 24t and 30 degrees for the 12t. (Ref. "Making your own Spur Gears the easy way" By F. E. (Pat) Loop, Strictly IC Vol. 7 No. 40 Aug/Sept 1994).  He also demonstrated how he cut the cams using the incremental indexing method.

ALEX BARRIE was next. He is building a 1/3 scale model of his Ammco shaper. He showed the clapper box assembly of the model alongside the full size unit as well as a taper pin reamer made from scratch. He made the point that it was important to make the taper pin itself at the same setup on the lathe. He made a T-slot cutter for the cross

feed stroke adjuster and showed the eccentric cam assembly. Two tools he had made to take carbide inserts

were also shown.

ROBERT WYSS showed a U-tube video of a manufacturing process in China where two operators were actually sitting inside the die section of the punch press. Scary!

CHRIS HIND talked about the foundry setup he has built. It all started with 3 crucibles he got for free.  Photos of the crane he built, as well as details of the blower and burner assembly were shown. A 45 gal drum was lined with brick and he showed how he made the lid and its lifting system.. He gave details of the design of the blower/burner in which he made sure could be adjusted for final tuning. A video followed of an attempt to make a picture frame casting using gold. He pointed out that gold is not easy to work with as the metal didn’t flow well into the open mould even after preheating it.

JIM BUGG brought in the boiler endplates for a 3” scale Case traction he is building. This is the first steel boiler that he is undertaking. The plates are ¼” thick and he talked about the method of construction using a hole saw for the boiler tube openings and a sander to dress the rounded end sections (Dave, I’m not too sure if my nomenclature is correct). He pointed out that since the plates are going to be welded together, it is not necessary to be too precise with the finish of the edges.

COFFEE HELPER STILL WANTED: Anyone interested in helping with the coffee at intermission time during our meetings. We still welcome a volunteer, or two. Please let any of the exec members know of your willingness to help out.

NEW MODELLER EDITOR: GEOFF KINGMA has offered to take over as Modeller Editor from Dave Bray as from September. Thank you Geoff!  (Dave Bray, for one, is very relieved, and thankful that Geoff has offered to do this!)
