It seems that the winter has finally bitten the dust – whew! This past week has been too cold for clearing up the garden, so you will have had time to make progress on your project/s – let’s see what you have done: so bring ‘em in. Come and join your fellow members, at our next meeting which will be on …….

FRIDAY 9 MAY 2008 AT 8.00pm  - 1001 QUEEN STREET WEST

IN THIS EVENING’S PROGRAM YOU CAN EXPECT TO HEAR FROM:

ROB STEHLIK will return with his new and improved fire eradicating robot for which KEN STRAUSS did the machining.

Pictures of this year’s NAMES show will be screened. ROBERT WYSS will have collected pictures from several members who went

DAVE OULTON will talk about some tooling he has made, and

RON MELVIN will show pictures of the Pickering Village Steam Show

Please note that there appears that there will be plenty of room on the front bench, so please bring in your projects for a kind of Pot Luck show - and tell (if you wish)

The club members would like to see models, or in progress of being built, that have not previously been shown. You do not have to talk about the item, if you prefer not to. We would just like to see it.

WHAT’S UP & COMING : MEETING DATES: 9 May, 13 June  @ 1001 Queen Street.

2008 IS OUR 75th ANNIVERSARY YEAR  If you have a suggestion as to what we could do to celebrate this, please make your suggestion known to anyone on our exec. It would be greatly appreciated.

It is sad news to have to report the death of GEORGE BLAIR on Wednesday 2 April 2008. George had been a member of TSME for some time, traveling in from his home in Guelph to be at the meetings. His interests were primarily in ships.

APRIL 2008 MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT,  (Thanks to Geoff Kingma for taking these notes)

BILL SALT was the first presenter. He brought in the tender of his ¼ scale “Little Sampson” traction engine with the riveting now almost completed. He demonstrated how he made a “dolly” out of a 12”x10”x1” metal block to support the rivet anvil pin. As well the beading on the edge was complete as well as the brake shoes which were made out of oak blocks. The seat was made out of Honduras mahogany which he milled then filed to shape. Many coats of varnish were applied. Asked how much time he had put into the tender build, he figured approximately 200 hours so far.

BERT DE KAT brought in his “Robin” single cylinder aero engine designed by Eric Whittle and showed the progress from his last talk. He mentioned that there was a problem with the cam profile in the drawings which resulted in too much lift. He will have to modify them as the springs are going solid. He also explained how he built the muffler, and the valve retaining clips which are similar to the letter C in shape.

ERIC MOTTON showed pictures of a pickup truck based hoist which he modified to put locomotive and traction engines in and out of his car. He made a steel base plate welded onto the base of the hoist which in turn could be mounted onto a concrete slab in the driveway. The slab was flush with the driveway paving and was 4 ft deep. It was so successful that another one was built at the RHLS facility.

He then showed photos of a modified engine stand to hold locos which could be rotated upside down for maintenance. He rewelded the stand’s vertical section so that the bolted-on rail portion was horizontal.

He also showed photos and video of an electric hoist that he installed above the basement stairs on a rail.

He can now move models up and down by himself. The model is mounted on a dolly and he can

control the ascent/descent by means of the remote switch unit. All in all an excellent solution for moving

heavy items. Finally he showed a short video of the RHLS in action at their facility. A few familiar faces were observed!

DON CARR brought in the G.H. Thomas designed bending rolls that he had made. Using “Superior” shafting for the rolls themselves, he very accurately made centre holes in the ends. This was in preparation for turning them between centers to machine the ends to fit the bearings and gears.

He also explained how he closely followed the procedure as laid out in GHT’s article in ME. (Also descibed in detail in his book “Model Engineers’ Workshop Manual”). Don also gave a brief description of the theory behind this particular design and how it leaves a flat spot only on the trailing edge (easily rectified by reversing the plate on the second pass).

KEN STRAUSS was the final speaker. He brought in a lighting fixture he made using LED’s housed in a piece of scrap plastic pipe screwed to an Aluminum backplate. He bought the LED’s from Hong Kong and built a regulator into the fixture. It draws only 5 watts and is very bright. The fixture mounts around the spindle of his Mill and is held in place by magnets.

WILLS: We recommend that you mention in your will, how you wish for the disposal of your models and modeling equipment. It certainly helps your family.
