OCTOBER MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT,
JOE FOSTER talked about the restoration, over the past 18 moths, of his Bren Gun Carrier – more correctly called a Weapons Carrier. It was not designed for battle but to carry weapons to battle. It is a tracked vehicle powered by a Ford flathead V8. It was in poor condition when found in cottage country. Steering is by turning a pair of track wheel sets, and for sharper turns, by braking one of the track drive wheels. Weight: about 8000lbs. Joe showed pictures of some of the carrier as found and as restored. The engine is now working, and Joe showed the extent he has to go to,
to restore, typically, 3 shutter mechanisms (that cover an opening in the armour plate to give protection to
the operators but allows them to see out).
ROMAN GORCZAK. Has started work on a Tessler Turbine model. The principle of this type of turbine is based on the viscosity of the fluid passing at fairly high velocity from a jet, between closely placed discs, and exiting near the centre of the discs through holes set close to the shaft. Power output can be increased by increasing the number of discs. Roman plans on using 16 jets. The shaft bearings are from a VCR playback head. The discs are about 2” dia. He is thinking of building an EDM machine the thin discs.
DAVE BOWES brought in his Silver Bullet Engine (Bob Shaw design). He said that there is still some work to be done – improve valve sealing, replace a coil, rad., water pump, fan & flywheel cover to complete. He demoed it running.
DAN O’CONNELL showed his mannequin kid, “Mydummy” on a small tricycle – in fact (the lifelike) ”kid” rode into the hall just as the meeting started – a bit of a surprise at first! Don explained the workings inside the body and how he imitated the shoulder movement as the tricycle was steered. He told that he has had some interesting comments while he has shown the tricycling kid off !
JOHN CHAPPELL brought down the power plant for his boat “Cora” and gave some tips for boat builders, and others: mount the power plant on one baseplate so that it can easily be removed for testing or maintenance. Add a shraeder valve so that the system can be pumped up with air and submerged to test for leaks, and suggested that valve stems be a loose fit in the valve bonnet so that the needle end can move slightly to locate in its seat to seal.
DAVE POWELL had a small machining vice he had purchased for $6.00. He had to do much corrective machining before he felt that the vice would suit his purposes. You gets what yous pays for, but if you like machining stuff – don’t calculate the “cost” in the hours to rectify your purchase !
RON MELVIN showed the locomotive running stand he has made for his 3 ½” gauge Royal Scot. The locomotive drive wheels will run on rollers which have grooves machined in them for the wheel flanges. Ron explained, with pictures, how the bearing bores were machined in a jig for accuracy.
