JUNE 2007 MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT, and/or FORGOT ABOUT THE ITEMS TALKED ABOUT !
DON CARR, TSME Archivist, made a request to make on behalf of the TSME archives that he is now cataloguing, for any interesting and relevant documents and/or photographs to be given to him. Photos of historical TSME interest will be posted on our website by KIM TYSON. These will be selected by Don and Kim. So far cataloguing for the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s has been completed. Don and Kim hope to have this all complete for the TSME 75th anniversary.
Don would also like to know the names of the TSME presidents from 1938 to 1970. If you can help, please contact Don.
GERRY REED is starting to plan for the TSME 75th ANNIVERSARY in 2008 – and would like suggestions from members for possible events. Please let Gerry know of your ideas.
DAVE SAGE talked about making Ignition Coils, and illustrated his talk with pictures. Dave built his own coil winder form scraps, except for its electronics which he said were not expensive and reasonable simple. The electronics are to control the wire feed rates and alignment on the coil using step motors. This gives a very neat and tidy coil. The coil core iron was from an old transformer machined to suit the coil dimensions that Dave had calculated in order to produce the current he wanted.
The bobbin was made in phenolic, machined on the lathe, and a layer of wax paper added between each
layer of coil wire, for improved insulation. Dave also mentioned that he found Super Corona Dope a good
insulator.
The AUCTION of little used Library books, and a few items donated by Geoff Kingma, netted a goodly amount for the Library, and therefore, for the purchase of some new books.
BUCK MacLEOD demonstrated his Magic Box Card Trick that he had made and which he shows to kids of all ages. He then went on to explain how he made this Magic Box, although he did say that it is not usual for a magician to reveal how tricks work, he would make a special concession to TSME
so we could appreciate how he made this particular trick. The “system” is powered by a 12 volt battery and is timed for each function to allow him time to talk along with each step. The snake is made around a car powered antenna, and its shape retained by using a Slinky spring, as is the tail. Other ingenious use of various common items were also used to give an extremely effective trick – the magicians’ code dose not permit any further details in print! So if you missed it – you missed it! You never know hat our meetings might bring. Buck also showed a knight’s helmet he had made using vacuum forming and coated with a bright chrome and gold finish. Buck made the vacuum forming set up himself using a 5HP Shop Vac. He explained how he did this. He mentioned that ALSA CORP (California) has some very good water based chrome coatings.
ANDREW KNIGHT gave us a talk on Solar Power Generation and its history. He mentioned that in the early 20th century, solar water heating systems were popular in Florida. Now there is a renewed interest in solar systems as a result of global warming. There are basically 2 type – active, as in using the sun’s rays to generate steam and in the use of voltaic cells; and passive, as using the suns rays though windows and greenhouses, for warmth. Andrew went on to show examples of contemporary power generation in the US, and other countries, using multiple parabolic mirrors that collect heat from the sun to generate steam for electrical generation. He also showed a few pictures of solar powered aircraft, called the Pathfinder that can stay aloft almost indefinitely.
NEW MODELLER EDITOR – PLEASE - SOMEONE?: DAVE BRAY wishes to retire from editing THE MODELLER, on or by September 2008 – that gives someone about a year to think about this and to come and offer
to take this over. I will have done this task for about 20 years by Sept 2008, and think it is time for some
new thinking. I have written up some guiding notes on what I have developed in putting the newsletter
together, and sending it out to members to help the new editor.
