March, 2009 MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
Bill Huxhold showed the progress he has made on the ME Beam engine that he is building without the use of castings. The cylinder was made from 660 bronze with a cast iron liner. The two flywheels were made from solid discs of 12L14 steel. He went into detail about how he cut out the material between the spokes and the subsequent rounding operation. He also mentioned that he does the boring of the hole in the hub as the last operation.
Eric Motton Gave a brief update about the upcoming International Steam meeting at the RHLS location on July 11 and 12.
Roger Cole brought in a very interesting 5 minute video about the manufacturing of Mosquito bombers in Australia in the 1940’s.
Dave Oulton mentioned that some videos of operating various machines of interest to the hobbyist are available on the Web site: techtv.mit.edu/collections/ehs-videos/videos The club has a copy on DVD available from the library.
Roy Elliott brought in the twin cam 4 cylinder engine he is building. He is now working on the valve gear and described how he held the springs in place while installing them. He went on to detail how he designed the delrin timing belt pulleys with measurements taken from the belt he had on hand. The cogs were machined using the method of first drilling holes then maching away the outer half.
Bert de Kat went to the January Cabin Fever show and he showed some pictures of some interesting models that were on display including the Monitor engine and the Duesenburg car which is nearing completion.
Gerry Reed brought in a mystery fixture and asked the audience to try and guess what it was for. No one got it! It was made to hold a “web trolley” wheel in a vise so that the operator could try and free it up from a rusted state. He described how he machined the block on his lathe.
Don Carr showed some parts and progress on the Hudson he is building. The detailed notes he is writing about the build makes for slow progress but it is being posted on the Chaski site. A detailed description followed on the making of the frame and the method of aligning it all.
Joe Foster showed some spark ignition model airplane engines that he had purchased from Sharky, one of which is an “Olsen & Rice”. They are being cleaned up and he hopes to have some running soon.
