NOVEMBER 2008 MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
ERIC MOTTON put together a photo tribute of Brian Glover who passed away recently. Brian was also a RHLS member and the photos of him driving steam engines showed him in his element.
BERT de KAT gave a talk about his early days at TSME which he joined on November, 1962. He found out about the Club through the Toronto Star and mentioned that the meetings were held at the U of T. He showed a photo of his first lathe which he purchased in Montreal. As well, shots of the commemorative items given out by the Club, and some of the members at meetings, picnics and open houses were shown. A very interesting snapshot of those days.
DON CARR talked about an engine with a split piston that was invented by a Mr Logan. Don has the correspondence that ensued between Mr Logan and the person who built the prototype. The two piston halves are connected to a common crank but are 90 degrees out of phase. Don hasn’t been able to get it to run and asked the members for possible reasons.
STEVE LILLY showed the “Silver Bullet” designed by Bob Shores that he is working on. it is almost complete with the rings, water pump and radiator still on the “to do” list. The points are from a gas engine and its spring has been made from a paper clip.
JOHN CAREY showed a very well made die filer that he is building from plans that were in Home Shop Machinist. He used a 4”x4” square tube for the frame and cut it out to make a channel. The drive is a 152rpm gear motor and the unit will be used to file plastic parts.
RON MELVIN and BILL HUXHOLD showed photos of their trip to the Vermont Precision Museum in Windsor, Vt. Some scenic shots of the Fall colours on the way were shown as were some really fascinating pictures of old machinery stored in the Museum. A future talk will be given to complete the presentation which will include models exhibited at the show.
