December, 2008 MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
BARRY FLETCHER brought in his model steam boat ”Buffy” and and his friend DOUG brought his steam engine. Barry talked about his model which incorporates a horizontal boiler (butane fired) and an oscillator engine. After finishing the engine he found that it ran fine on air but not so on steam. He then described how he modified the brass on brass connections to get it running. He also explained how he fills the butane tank and ensures that any spilled fluid is removed before firing it up.
He then descibed how they designed and built a burner (using refractory brick) and the deflector. The layout of the many 1/16” holes drilled in the brick were also detailed.
DOUG then talked about the twin oscillator engine he built for his boat. He described how he modified the design to a single central column. He mentioned that he had gone the propane route for his boiler.
PAUL STEARNS gave the second part of his presentation on steels and clamping. He reviewed the stress/strain curve for materials and how one needs to stay in the elastic portion of the curve for springs. He showed some examples of springs, with complicated shapes to constrain movement in one plane, and backlash-free hinges. He then showed a video of the brief Ornithopter flight and also one of the preceding models that stayed up in the air much longer!
DAVE OULTON brought In a Stuart Beam engine that he had restored from its as received condition. Many of the holes had to be redone and some items had been assembled incorrectly. It now runs very smoothly and he said that the had learned some new machining techniques.
DAVE BOWES made a semi-scale model of a DH Chipmunk, designed for indoor flying, which he brought to the meeting. It uses a brushless DC motor which weighs only 5 gms, a 1gm speed controller along with an 8gm battery. He also described the wing and fuselage material (Depron) and how the motor works.
KEN STRAUSS showed photos of his visit to the Midlands, UK Model Show last Fall with many very interesting models. He also showed photos of items at various museums he visited along with a visit to Mike Sayers’ workshop.
