February, 2009 MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
Eric Motton announced more details of the upcoming International Model Steam Meet. It will be held on July 11 and 12, 2009, at the RHLS location. He asked for volunteers to help with visitors from out of town.
Charles Foster brought in a ¼ scale model of a 5HP Galloway Hit and Miss engine. He obtained the castings from Richard Shelley, Mannheim, Pa. It is almost finished with final tuning still to be done. We look forward to seeing it running.
Gerry Reed showed photos of a Horizontal/Vertical milling machine he bought. After partial dismantling and wrestling it into the basement, he stripped the rest of the components down to check for wear etc. A central oiler on it had never been hooked up so he made all the bits and pieces required. As well many surfaces were mis-aligned requiring some remachining. He has rigged up a low voltage control box in the front with relays to control the various line voltage items, including the two drive motors.
Jim Bugg is building a 3” model of a Case Traction Engine. He showed progress to date on the flywheel, cylinder and crosshead. He showed photos of some of the machining operations and how the flywheel was just able to fit on his lathe. He mentioned that he didn’t bring the steel boiler in as it is too heavy!
Dave Oulton demonstrated a Stuart #9 horizontal engine that he purchased partially finished. Many items had to be remachined/aligned to get it running. Now it will run on mouth pressure. This is his acceptance criteria for a well made unit, though he took some ribbing about the lack of paint!
Eric Kingsley brought in a model of a Mosquito Bomber that he made out of solid aluminum about 15 years ago. All the surfaces were filed. He has also done the same with a Spitfire, a Lancaster and a Meteor. He mentioned that he had worked on all these planes during his career. He explained how he went about cutting and filing the components, and the final assembly.
Roy Elliott brought in some components of a 4 cylinder DOHC engine he is building. It has an 11/32” bore and stroke with cast iron pistons and liners (which are pressed into the aluminum block). He explained how he made the valves and valve seats and then lapped them in situ.
Bill Huxhold is working on a new engine from plans but without using available castings! It is the ME Beam engine. The beam was built up from brass (20 items) and soldered together. Afterwards it was sandblasted to give an “as cast” appearance. He described how he used a form tool to make the “entasis” sections (I looked it up) on the column and how he remedied a broken component that had been milled out of 1144.
ITEMS FOR SALE, WANTED OR SWAPS:
WANTED: Any castings or partial completed model steam engines. David Oulton,
GERRY REED is interested in finding any member who has access to a pantograph engraver. He would like to engrave all the brass plates on his mill as regards degree settings and indicator marks.

meetings and/or events. He is especially interested in the 2000 – 2008 period. He would like to borrow the
