March, 2009 MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Nigel Coppola showed his very elegant 2” scale Durham, North Yorkshire traction engine which was made to a John Haining design. He went into detail on how he machined the flywheel which he had previously attached to a faceplate. He then showed some photos of this engine under steam and also of his 3” scale model TE.

Dave Oulton brought in an indexer that he had purchased in the US. However, it needed “tuning” to get into operating condition. He enlisted the help of Dave Powell who recommended stoning the tight jaw guides on the chuck as well as remounting it to the backplate. He plans to use this indexer to drill the holes on the cylinder heads of the Stuart D10 he is working on.

Steve Lilly showed the small horizontal oscillater engine he made from a design in Live Steam Magazine. He also mentioned that he is working on the radiator of the Silver Bullet that he building.

Dave Powell, President of the Club mentioned that in order for the Club to meet its financial obligations, next year’s dues will need to be paid by September 30. He also mentioned the possibility of the dues having to be increased.

Peter Hale talked about a Rob Roy boiler he brought in that was built in the 1960’s by a previous owner. It currently will not pass the pressure test due to a leak in the stays. He mentioned that he has used Loctite sealant to try and fix the problem but hasn’t yet had the chance to retest it.

Bill Huxhold showed more progress on the ME Beam engine he is making without castings. He has now completed the governor and is working on the parallel links.. He went into detail on how he made them with help of a form tool. He then described how he machined the crankshaft.

Bill Salt brought in the flywheel from the traction engine he is building. He described how he machined it and the problem he has had with chatter marks on the rim. Possible solutions were offered from members, which he will try out.

Ron Melvin showed some photos of a 3 ½” Pacific class 4-6-2 locomotive he very recently purchased from an owner in the Ottawa region. It really does work as photos from a “that morning” steamup with Dave Powell at the RHLS track testify. It was hard to decide who had the biggest grin while driving the engine!

Luke Elliott showed a chassis of a model 4 wheel drive truck he recentl bought. He plans to modify it into a rock crawler along with rear steering.

Don Carr showed a drill sharpener made from plans in Model Engineer. He also showed the spindle housing he is making for the grinding head section. He descibed how he went about making a gauge or plug for the bearing recesses. He then showed photos of a “Christen” grinder that he bought and also machining the housing on his Herbet 2D Capstan lathe.

Dave Bowes started a “Silver Bullet” a while back. Now he is working on the water pump and showed how he went about making the gears using a fly cutter to machine the teeth. He then showed photos detailing how he made the housing for the pump.
