OCTOBER 2008 MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT,

GERRY REED Spoke about his next door neighbour who races Porsche Cars, modifying the engines by adding a second spark plug to the heads of the 6 cylinder engines. Gerry is involved with making this modification. He explained how he first drilled out a spark plug so that he could insert a 3/8” dia. rod through it to use as a set up datum for his jig. The jig which Jerry showed held the heads at the correct angle for drilling and tapping as well as for milling out a clearance bore for the spark plug wrench. Jerry mentioned that the head material, although an aluminum alloy, required him to take care as it was quite brittle.

JOHN CHAPPELL brought in his first model steam powered boat – his “Black Boat”. This project was started sometime around 1928 after John was given a Stuart Oscillating Engine and boiler assembly kit which he decided to put in a boat. This he designed and built, using 1/8” ply frames and covered with strips of card and then painted with many coats inside and out to seal it. John had to add some lead ballast to improve stability (the boat inverted when he filled the boiler with water!). The boiler was fired up during the early 1930’s and the boat gave many hours of pleasure at the family cottage. John devised a clever way of having the boat return to shore – a cigarette was lit in the hull and when it burnt to its end, it burnt through a string causing the rudder to spring over and steer the boat back to shore!

BILL HUXHOLD brought in his Single Corliss Engine complete in its recently finished oak and glass show case. Bill said that he prefers glass for a show case since it doesn’t scratch, as plastic tends to. He is still to complete the piping to the engine, and to finish the valves and piston.

DAVE BRAY showed his completed Steam driven feed water pump that is to be fitted to his Sweet Pea loco. He also brought in the ‘just started’ frames for a 4 ¾” gauge model of Dougal, a 2’ 6” gauge 0-4-0T built by Andrew Barclay for the Glasgow gasworks in 1946, and still in existence on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway in UK. Dave mentioned that he is contemplating purchasing a complete boiler from an, as yet not chosen, UK supplier.

RON MELVIN showed his home made Tapping Head. Ron also showed pictures of several traction Engines owned by Dave Powell’s friend, Nigel. The pictures showed Ron and Nigel driving these engines on the road. A 2” scale Mini, a 3” scale Burrel (a Plastow design) and a third, a 2” Durham& North York, that Nigel has recently refurbished.

DAVE BOWES brought in and talked about his 8ft wing span model of a De Havilland Turbo Beaver fitted with his Mk3EVIC 17cc engine. Dave mentioned that it took him about 1 ½ Years to find a suitable aircraft for his engine that would be large enough to carry the approx 5lbs of engine, its electronics and radio control equipment. He had quite a few problems to solve before a successful flight and many of which Dave outlined. He had to fit a Walbro carburetor rather than the simpler type he had initially. He added weight to the tailplane for better balance and had to solve radio interference problems. First taxi trials ended with the aircraft flipping over and ripping of the left wing! He has now beefed up the fuselage. The aircraft flew successfully 8 October and Dave had a short video to prove it!

PAUL STEARNS talked about how you can utilize the strength and natural spring in steel to make some interesting and useful clamping and thread locking and centering devices
