JUN 2008 MEETING - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT,

Prior to the start of the meeting, a Trunk Sale was held in the CAMH parking lot. Hopefully successful for both buyers and sellers!

GERALD GARDINER explained the system for obtaining library books now that the Library will not be accessible at our new meeting location, The Toronto Aerospace Museum. A list of books will be displayed on the TSME website. Call Gerald before the meeting and he will arrange to have the your requested books at the following meeting for you.

DON CARR spoke about his self made Shaper Tool Holder – similar in design to an Armstrong type but with a rotating head to allow the tool to be positioned in 6 different angles. Don said that he got the design off the web. The stem is made of H.R. steel welded to a 1” dia. head. The square hole was made by broaching (at great expense) by Don. He found this too tight, the square tools not being an accurate ¼”, so he enlarged the square using a “George Barret” single step broach he made up.

RON MELVIN then showed some pictures of this year’s Pickering Steam Show and also a few pictures from this year’s Wings and Wheels Heritage Show at the Aerospace Museum.

LUKE showed his modified production kit RC race car and explained the modifications he had made. The 0.2cc engine runs on nitro-methane fuel and car power the car to up to 60mph!

PETER ROCK then showed his delightful 1 ½” scale model of a 7HP (1890’s) Burrell Traction Engine he has nearly finished. Peter bought the castings way back in 1964 from Bassett-Lowke, worked on it for about 2 years, but bought a ful size traction engine. He restarted work on the model traction engine about 2 years ago.

BILL SALT brought in his “propane tank storage” Caboose. The caboose holds a mid size propane tank which will be used to fire his locomotives. The caboose also holds a water tank as well as the regulator for the propane. The caboose is made from ¼” ply with sides grooved vertically to simulate the real thing.

ANDREW KNIGHT had tabled some questions regarding Hot Air Engines for which he wanted answers. The questions related specifically to the hot side design.

DAVE SAGE showed the progress with the Jerry Howell V8 Engine. The cylinders have been machined in the aluminum crankcase. The engine will be water cooled. The crankshaft is made up of multiple sections with 3 main bearings. Dave found it rather a tricky operation to assemble the crankshaft into the crankcase and be able to set the cranks accurately at right angles to each other.
