September, 2009 MEETING - in case you missed it
Dave Sage showed some of the many parts he has made for his custom V8 engine. Amongst the items was a cylinder head with the valve gear partially assembled. He also described how he made the cams using his milling machine that has been converted to CNC. He showed the ignition circuit board and pointed out the difficulties of machining it on the mill due to the board not being flat which resulted in variable cutter depth.
Doug Roung brought his “Free Piston” Stirling cycle engine which is a purchased BIO Demonstrator. He talked about how important the two springs are to the successful operation of the engine. Soon after he lit some alcohol, which he had placed on the burner section, it was chugging away with its distinctive sound. He mentioned the possible applications of this type of engine.
Bill Huxhold had another “it’s done – works well” model to show. It is a Lady Stephanie designed by Tubal Cain. Again, exquisite workmanship done without the aid of castings. He described how he made the tapered columns and the fluting on each one.
Bob Crawford wasn’t able to show the video of the picnic due to technical difficulties but a video of the RHLS International meet held in July was shown with some of our members in the cast. From the smiles on their faces, it was difficult to tell if the children who were passengers were having more fun than the drivers!
The Auction of items donated to the Club was held next. All in all a lively one which went quickly. It raised $244 for the Club – thanks to all.
Ramsay Holmes brought in some examples of “Rose Engine” turning on metal. He talked about the 1840 vintage Ornamental lathe he has and which works well on wood. He has purchased a Rose Engine so he can work in metal and now has organized his workshop so he can finally use it. “Engine Turning“ is another name for the technique and he talked about how it worked. He has 30 Rosettes on the machine and showed various samples of the work that can be done in brass, copper, aluminum and stainless steel.
Phil Regan gave a talk and showed slides of the various metals that can be used by model makers. He explained how the SAE system of numbers work and the properties contained therein. The list was for typical metals that we are likely to use. The rapid disappearance of the copies he left on the table attest to the usefulness of the information to the members.
Dave Bowes brought in the engine he is rebuilding that is used in his Beaver model plane. The crankshaft is now complete and he showed how he made a 1/16” keyway to locate the timing disc. The carb he has fitted to the engine is a purchased item, made by Saito. He mentioned that he hopes to get in at least one flight using the improved engine before it gets too cold.
