September, 2009 MEETING - in case you missed it
Gerry Reed gave a talk on how to use fixed (steady rest) and travelling steadies. He demonstrated how he used a fixed steady to make replacement handles for a garden shear. He had to use the steady rest since the pipe would not fit in the spindle of his lathe. He then explained in detail when a travelling steady is used and
how to set it up.
Dave Oulton brought a boiler he made from the remains of an expresso coffee maker. His plan was to make a test unit so he added a pressure gauge and mounted it on a piece of Corian. The unit effectively generated steam soon after he plugged it in.
Dave Bray showed some photos of his Myford lathe and the clutch unit that he added a few years after purchasing the lathe. He recently noticed that the clutch was slipping and took it apart to see if it was worn. It appeared to be ok but after reassembly the slipping was still there. Upon further investigation he found that the pulley on the countershaft was the culprit. After tightening the setscrew in the pulley everything was fine.
Dave Bowes showed a picture of the model De Havilland Beaver flying over a tree. The only problem was that the tree got too close! The resulting crash bent the crankshaft. He explained how he thought the unsupported length of the crankshaft was deficient and how he is going to redesign the engine block. He showed the partially completed block and mentioned that the crankshaft was next item on the “to be built list”.
Dave Powell brought in a Hudson locomotive that he purchased, sight unseen. He described the numerous deficiencies that he found and rectified. It did have a cast brass chassis, though. He described how he added Teflon rings to the bobbins and how he had to adjust the timing as a result of adding them. It is still a “work in process” and consumes too much coal.
