June, 2009 MEETING - in case you missed it
Bert de Kat visited the Harrogate Model show in the UK in May and showed some photos of the displays. He mentioned that the exhibits were by the various clubs and not individually as we are used to. He also showed photos taken at the Railroad Museum and also the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester.
Dave Bray Showed a completed locomotive boiler for a “Dougal”. The castings were purchased from Reeves and he had the boiler built by a company in the UK. Along with the completed boiler was an extensive set of documents regarding the testing and compliance with EU regulations. Dave figured that by having the boiler made, he has taken “years” off his build cycle for the loco.
Bill Huxhold brought in the ME Beam engine that has been building. His only comment was “All done, runs well”. As always, an exquisitely turned out model made without castings.
Steve Estok showed a milling vise he made using D2 for the base and HR for the jaws. He explained how he machined and then ground the parts
Dave Powell explained how he was able to get the components for a Henry Greenleigh traction engine which he plans to build to a 2” scale. He showed the crankshaft and cylinder casting. By picking up unwanted/unused items from other modelers as well as swapping and scrounging, he has most of the items on hand without spending any money!
Eric Motton visited to the Anson Engine Museum in Cheshire, UK last year. He showed some photos of the engines on display including some very large ones, some of which were still stored outside waiting for restoration.
Dave Oulton has now completed the Stuart D10 he has been building. He thanked the folks who helped him with tips and procedures.
Gerry Reed reminisced about hot tube ignition engines which had been mentioned by a previous presenter. This was during his apprenticeship days and the “works” had a temperamental engine that needed frequent attention. He mentioned one character who knew how to get it started and his own involvement helping him.
